The Pacific Maritime Association has partnered with Marine Exchange an in effort to reduce air pollution and congestion in SF Bay. A queuing system – similar to that of the Port of LA/LB – will reduce waterway congestion by assigning appointments to vessels and having them remain 50 miles off the coast while they wait.  “The overall goal is to reduce congestion, to promote maritime safety, and minimize air quality impacts,” stated Port of Oakland spokesperson Roberto Bernardo. Stakeholders are optimistic about air quality improvement through reduced emissions in The Bay Area as the new 50-mile distance creates a new zone named, “Safety and Air Quality Area.”
