Assembly Bill 5 (AB5), a state-level labor rule, looms over 70,000 truckers working across California. Owner-operators are battling transition fees that could reach up to $20,000 a year, along with concerns around the implementation of AB5.
“We have never gotten any good answers from anyone official in California on how this is supposed to be enforced or how our members can comply,” mentioned Norita Taylor, the PR Director of California’s Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.
As the regulation comes to fruition, other ports across the country are using AB5 as a building block for their supply chains. Although larger ports like New York & New Jersey failed, other states like Washington and Massachusetts seek to find order given the recent chaos.
